Jude Bellingham scored twice as England defeated Norway 2-1 after extra time on 11 July, sending the Three Lions into a World Cup semifinal against defending champions Argentina.

The Real Madrid midfielder equalised late in the first half before scoring again in the 93rd minute. The goals took his tournament total to six, level with England captain Harry Kane, according to FIFA’s match report.

Bellingham’s performances have placed him at the centre of England’s campaign, but he has repeatedly credited his parents, Mark and Denise, with creating the foundation for his career.

Mark Bellingham Introduced Him to Football

Bellingham was born in Stourbridge, England, on 29 June 2003. His earliest memories of football involved watching his father play in the English non-league system on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mark Bellingham combined football with his work as a sergeant in West Midlands Police. He was estimated to have scored more than 700 non-league goals before retiring, according to a 2020 Guardian interview with his son.

“I used to watch him play all the time; it’s where I started to get that love for football,” Jude Bellingham told the newspaper. He said the toughness and determination associated with non-league football influenced his own game.

That interest did not emerge immediately. In a first-person account published by England Football, Bellingham recalled picking grass while other children played. His mother was ready to stop taking him before football finally captured his attention at about age 6.

He joined Stourbridge Juneors around a year later, with his father serving as a coach. Mark avoided overloading him with technical instructions. Instead, he told his son to enjoy himself, play with a smile, try his best and give 100%.

Bellingham said that message still stays with him during difficult matches. His father’s approach emphasised effort and persistence rather than constant correction from the touchline.

Denise Provided Stability Away from the Pitch

Bellingham has described his mother’s influence in different terms. Denise taught him lessons about life outside football, including how to stay calm, set an example for teammates and lead other people.

“I think a lot of that comes from my mum because she’s a very good leader,” Bellingham told England Football.

When he left Birmingham City for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 at age 17, Denise moved to Germany with him. Her presence helped him manage the attention and pressure that accompanied his rapid progress into senior football.

Bellingham said his mother kept his emotions balanced during both successful and difficult periods. He described her role as greater than that of his coaches and managers because she helped him handle the parts of professional football that happened away from the pitch.

In his Guardian interview, Bellingham described both parents as working-class people who taught him through their own conduct. “Before being great parents they’re great people,” he said. He credited them with teaching him to work hard, avoid giving up and pursue his goals.

A Career Built Across Three Clubs

Bellingham progressed through Birmingham City’s academy and became the club’s youngest first-team player before joining Dortmund. He moved to Real Madrid in 2023 and remains a midfielder for the Spanish club.

On his 23rd birthday, Real Madrid reported that he had played 140 matches and scored 46 goals for the club. His honours there include the Champions League, La Liga, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

His younger brother, Jobe, also became a professional footballer after growing up in the same household. Jude has said that the brothers were fiercely competitive as children, although his advice to Jobe mirrors their father’s message: enjoy the game and play freely.

As England prepare to face Argentina in Atlanta on 15 July, Bellingham’s current role reflects the lessons he has publicly associated with his parents: Mark’s emphasis on effort and enjoyment, and Denise’s influence on composure, leadership and life beyond football.
