Edin Dzeko is staying at Schalke 04. The veteran Bosnian forward has reached an agreement to extend his contract by one year, securing his place at the German club until June 2027.

For Schalke, the decision goes beyond preserving a famous name. The club, having just secured a return to the Bundesliga, relies on the 40-year-old's experience in the final third. While his age might be a factor, his goal-scoring record last season left club officials with little doubt about offering an extension.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported the deal on Sunday. Dzeko reportedly turned down multiple offers from Italian Serie A sides, Major League Soccer teams, and other Bundesliga clubs to remain in Gelsenkirchen. It is a decisive move for a player entering the twilight of his career.

A Promotion-Winning Reunion

Dzeko arrived at Schalke on a free transfer from Fiorentina in January 2026. His initial deal was a short-term contract slated to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season. At the time, Schalke was fighting for promotion from the 2. Bundesliga and required an immediate impact player without the luxury of time for experimentation.

The move paid off. Dzeko tallied six goals in the second half of the campaign. While modest for a striker of his stature, his contributions were vital to Schalke securing the 2. Bundesliga title and earning automatic promotion to Germany's top flight.

Beyond the goals, Dzeko brought composure and tactical positioning to a team under pressure. During critical matches, his presence in the opposition penalty area provided the team with a necessary sense of security. The management clearly views him as a pillar for their upcoming top-flight campaign, aiming to maintain performance standards and provide a veteran presence in the dressing room.

Rejecting Offers to Remain

Dzeko’s choice reflects a measured approach to the final chapters of his playing days. Despite significant interest from abroad, he opted for the club that provided him with a fresh stage.

For a newly promoted side, stability is a valuable asset. Schalke requires players who understand the rhythm of high-stakes competition. Dzeko has transformed from a shrewd free-agent acquisition into an essential component of the club's structure.

With his new deal finalized, Dzeko is set to lead the line for Schalke through the summer of 2027. The veteran clearly believes he has unfinished business at the club.
