A passenger train from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed in East Sussex on Thursday, closing several rail routes and prompting a swift emergency response near Lewes.
The Southern service came off the tracks just before 4 p.m. between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Images from the scene showed at least two carriages on their side, with passengers standing on top of the overturned coaches while others waited in nearby heathland beside emergency workers. The situation looked chaotic. But the toll was limited.
No fatalities reported
Officials said all passengers were believed to have been taken off the train. There were no reported deaths or serious injuries, and a government source said there were no fatalities or critical injuries. “Everyone is now off the train. It’s walking wounded basically,” the source said.
Emergency services moved quickly to the area and urged people to stay away. Travellers were also told to allow up to 60 minutes extra for rail journeys in the region while crews dealt with the derailment and checked the line.
Routes shut as crews respond
Several rail routes were closed after the incident, causing knock-on disruption across the area. Network Rail and Southern Rail confirmed the derailment involved the 14:24 Southern passenger service from Victoria to Eastbourne in the Lewes area of East Sussex.
A spokesperson for the two companies said emergency services were on site and that updates would follow. No cause for the derailment was given.
The incident adds to a familiar concern for rail passengers: when one train comes off the tracks, the disruption rarely stays local. Even with no serious injuries, a single derailment can snarl regional links fast. Very fast.
