Princess Eugenie has named her newborn daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, two weeks after giving birth in Lisbon, Portugal. The royal said the name pays tribute to “three people we love and admire past and present”, including Queen Elizabeth II.
Eugenie, 36, shared the announcement on Instagram along with new photographs of the baby girl. One image shows the newborn being held by one of her brothers. Another captures all three children together. Tiny. Quiet. Content.
A name with royal and cross-border ties
In her post, Eugenie said the name reflects “English and Portuguese history” and the two places the family “love and call home”. That detail gives the choice a personal edge, linking the child’s name to both family memory and the couple’s life between Britain and Portugal.
The middle name Elizabeth is a clear nod to Eugenie’s late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Eugenie said the family holds her “close in our hearts”. The meaning of Annina was not explained in the announcement.
Adelaide was born earlier this month at a hospital in Lisbon, weighing 6lb 9oz. Buckingham Palace had already confirmed the birth, saying the King, Queen and other members of the royal family were pleased by the news.
Third child for Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank
Adelaide is Eugenie’s third child with husband Jack Brooksbank. Their sons, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, were born in 2021 and 2023.
The princess wrote that the family has been enjoying “the most special, cosy and love-filled time” since the birth. “Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers,” she added.
The name Adelaide also carries a royal echo of its own. Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen was queen of the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1830 to 1837 as the wife of King William IV.
For the House of Windsor, the announcement adds another name to a younger generation already closely watched for its ties to the monarchy’s past and its future. For Eugenie, though, this one sounds simpler. A family name, a family memory. And a baby girl, born in Lisbon, now introduced to the world at 6lb 9oz.
