South African media personality and musician Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, better known as Jub Jub, now faces an arrest warrant after failing to show up in a Germiston Magistrate’s Court hearing on Monday, Aug. 24. The court said the warrant will only take effect on Sept. 7, when the case returns to court.

The move keeps pressure on the entertainer, who is accused in a case tied to an incident in Edenvale on June 14. He faces charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing an object that could have led someone to believe it was a gun.

Missed appearance

According to his legal defence, Jub Jub had been booked off sick since Thursday, Aug. 20. The court nonetheless issued a warrant after he did not appear in person for the scheduled hearing.

The warrant was not activated immediately. That detail matters. It leaves a narrow window before the matter comes back before the magistrate on Sept. 7.

Allegations from Edenvale

Police say the case stems from a confrontation with an e-hailing driver after a drop-off at a residence in Edenvale. Investigators allege Jub Jub accused the driver of being romantically involved with his girlfriend.

Authorities also say the situation escalated when he allegedly forced the driver into his vehicle and stopped him from leaving. During the encounter, he reportedly fired a gun in the driver’s direction. The driver escaped unharmed and drove away.

The case has pulled fresh attention because of Jub Jub’s public profile. He has long been a familiar name in South African entertainment, and courtroom developments around him tend to draw broad interest well beyond the country’s borders.

For now, the next date is fixed. If Jub Jub does not appear when the case returns to court on Sept. 7, the arrest warrant can be put into effect.
