A young man died after being stabbed inside Brent Civic Centre in Wembley on Tuesday afternoon, sending council offices and a public library into lockdown in north-west London. Emergency services were called at about 2:30 p.m. BST, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police said the victim is believed to have been a teenage boy or a man in his early 20s. No arrests had been made by late Tuesday, and officers said they were carrying out urgent inquiries to identify and trace those responsible.
Civic centre evacuated
Brent Civic Centre sits near Wembley Stadium, one of London’s busiest and most recognisable districts. The building houses Brent Council’s headquarters and a library, making the attack especially unsettling for staff, residents and visitors in the area.
Councillor Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said the borough had been “shaken” by what he called an appalling and deeply tragic incident. He said the council’s thoughts were with the victim’s family and with people who witnessed what happened.
“The Civic Centre has been evacuated and will remain closed until further notice,” Butt said. He urged people to avoid the area and allow police and emergency services to do their work.
Police investigation under way
The Met said the investigation was active and asked the public not to speculate or share unverified claims online. That warning often follows major violent incidents in crowded public places, where rumors can spread quickly before investigators establish the basic facts.
The killing adds to continuing concern over knife crime in Britain’s biggest cities, where police and local authorities have repeatedly faced pressure to reduce violence in public spaces. Central civic buildings, libraries and transport hubs are generally seen as everyday civic spaces, which makes attacks there particularly alarming for local communities.
Brent Council said it was working closely with the Metropolitan Police and would issue further information as soon as it could. For now, the scene remains sealed off, the building is closed, and detectives are trying to piece together what happened before a young man was left dead inside a place meant for public service.
“There is an active police investigation under way,” Butt said. “Please do not speculate or repeat any unverified claims online.”
