Police said a 38-year-old woman inside the unit refused to let officers in. While they waited outside, they learned a man had fallen from a balcony. He was found with critical injuries and died at the scene despite attempts by officers and paramedics to save him.
Police response in Elizabeth Bay
The incident unfolded at a residential complex in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, a district better known for its harbourside apartments than emergency callouts. Officers were at the address early Sunday morning, trying to speak with the man as part of what police described only as ongoing investigations.

As officers remained outside, they were told a man had fallen. Police found the 40-year-old and began first aid before paramedics took over. The man could not be revived.
Scene sealed off after death
An Inner West Police Area Command critical incident team has established a crime scene. That step signals the case will be examined in detail, including the sequence of events inside the apartment and the circumstances around the balcony fall.
Police also said the 38-year-old woman inside the unit refused entry to officers before the death. Authorities have not released further details about the ongoing investigations.
An independent review has now been triggered by the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, adding another layer of scrutiny to the police response and the fatal fall.
