SOUTHPORT, England — The Red Arrows’ return to the Southport Air Show ended after only two minutes on Sunday when heavy rain forced organisers to stop the RAF team’s display over safety concerns.
The Royal Air Force aerobatic team had been scheduled to fly at 3.30pm on the second and final day of the event, but an announcement to the crowd said it was unsafe for the formation to continue as the weather deteriorated. The display began in dry conditions, then rain set in hard just as the jets took to the sky.
Families watching on the seafront
About 200 people were near the seafront when the display was halted, including many families. The Red Arrows had delighted the crowd the day before with their trademark speed and precision flying, and their second appearance was expected to be one of the day’s highlights.
It was not the only part of Sunday’s flying programme to fall victim to the weather. The 1.19pm Tutor display and the 2.57pm Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers show were both cancelled, while the Typhoon, the day’s final act, went ahead as planned.
Safety first as programme changes
Southport Air Show organisers said weather conditions were being monitored throughout the day and that any decisions on the flying schedule would be made with safety in mind. The message reflected a familiar reality for airshows, where strong winds, rain and poor visibility can change plans quickly, even for the best-known display teams.
The Red Arrows’ 2026 season is already in its final weeks, with the team’s official schedule stretching from the Essex coast to Scotland, the Channel Islands and continental Europe before a final planned appearance at IWM Duxford in October. Their programme remains subject to weather, aircraft availability and operational requirements.
On Sunday, the rain won. The jets did not.
