A 16-year-old school student from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly assaulted on a sleeper bus after she asked the driver and conductor for help during heavy rain on Aug. 4, police sources said. The two men have been arrested, and the case has renewed scrutiny of passenger safety on inter-city buses in northern India.
How the journey went wrong
The girl, a Class 11 student from Mainpuri, had left home after an argument with her mother and was travelling to Noida to meet a cousin, according to police sources. Rain and poor visibility appear to have played a role in what happened next. She got down at Pari Chowk by mistake after heading toward Noida Sector 63.
Stranded late in the evening, she flagged down a bus that was empty at the time. Police sources said the conductor told her the vehicle was bound for Noida Sector 63, and she got on. The bus, however, was not carrying regular passengers that night.
What followed has triggered an investigation that stretches across Noida and Delhi. The assault allegedly took place inside the moving bus as it travelled from the Greater Noida area toward Delhi. The girl was later left near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal and the men fled, sources said.
Arrests and police response
Police identified the accused as the driver and conductor of the bus. They were arrested within hours of the complaint, according to the source material. One report said officers found them resting in the bus in Timarpur after the incident.
The teenager then approached Kashmere Gate police, who arranged for her medical examination in the presence of a woman police personnel. An FIR was registered, though the source material does not provide the full details of the charges.
Delhi Police took cognisance after the complaint was filed in the capital, even though the assault was said to have happened in Noida. Investigators have since pieced together the route the bus took between Pari Chowk, Noida Sector 63 and Kashmere Gate.
Questions over bus safety checks
The case has also raised fresh concern over safety checks for public and private buses on routes linking Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. One report said the sleeper bus travelled about 47 kilometres without being checked at a police picket, a lapse that has drawn attention because of safeguards introduced after India’s 2012 Delhi gang rape case.
That reference still hangs over every such crime in the region. The latest case has revived public anxiety about night travel, especially for young women who depend on shared transport after dark and in bad weather.
The chargesheet in the case is expected soon, according to police sources. For now, investigators are focused on the sequence of events that began with a wrong stop in the rain and ended with a bus ride that police say turned into an alleged crime scene.
“The alleged assault took place while she was travelling from Pari Chowk, Greater Noida,” North Delhi DCP Niharika Bhatt said.
