Bail with strict conditions
The boy appeared in the Childrens Court on Thursday, where a judge allowed him to be released under tight restrictions. He must wear an ankle tracking monitor and follow a 24-hour curfew. The court’s decision means he can leave custody for now, but only under supervision and with strict limits on where he can go.
The case stems from an incident in July, when police arrested the 15-year-old and six other children, aged 14 to 17, over the alleged assault in Kelvin Grove. At the time, the boy was charged with robbery in company and grievous bodily harm. After the 27-year-old man died in August, that charge was upgraded to murder.
What police allege happened
According to the allegations, the group dragged the man from his car, beat him and stole his ute. When the victim tried to stop them from escaping in the vehicle, he was allegedly run over. Police have described the man as having suffered a prolonged and brutal assault before his death.
The alleged attack has drawn attention because it involved several children and unfolded in a residential part of Brisbane. Kelvin Grove sits close to the city centre, and the case has already moved from an initial arrest involving property and assault offences to the far more serious accusation of murder.
