The Indian Air Force said the Khagantak-243 trial, carried out this week, met all objectives and marked a fresh step in the country’s push for home-built stand-off weapons.
A test aimed at distance
The weapon is described as a long-range precision-guided glide bomb in the 300-kg class, with a range of more than 140 km. Indian media reports put the reach at about 144 km to 180 km, depending on release conditions, when dropped from 12 km altitude at Mach 0.8. That matters. A longer glide range gives aircraft more room to stay out of the most dangerous parts of an adversary’s air-defence envelope.
The IAF said on X that the drop trial of the indigenously designed and developed Khagantak-243 was a “significant milestone” for the force and Indian industry. The service also said the test showed “new peaks of lethality” under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India push. The phrasing was pointed, but the message was plain: India wants more of its strike arsenal designed and built at home.
Built by industry partners
The weapon was developed jointly by Bharat Electronics Limited and JSR Dynamics, a Nagpur-based start-up. Sources cited in Indian media said JSR Dynamics provided the bomb body and control systems, while BEL supplied electronics and guidance subsystems. The project followed a Development-cum-Production Partner model, a structure that has become a useful shorthand in India’s defence sector for pairing public-sector scale with private-sector design work.
That mix is important for India’s wider military modernisation. For years, New Delhi has tried to reduce dependence on imported precision munitions and other high-end weapons. Khagantak-243 fits neatly into that effort. It is meant to strengthen stand-off strike capability, the kind that allows a combat aircraft to fire from a safer distance rather than fly deep into defended airspace.
What the bomb carries
Indian reports say the designation “243” refers to the configuration class of the bomb. They also say Khagantak-243 carries a 125 kg Mk-81 general-purpose blast fragmentation warhead inside a cylindrical body. The weapon uses swivel-type mid-body glide wings and five aft control surfaces, with a glide ratio of more than 12. Those are not flashy details, but they are the sort that decide whether a glide bomb reaches its mark efficiently.
The IAF has already placed an order with BEL for an unspecified number of Khagantak-243 munitions, though the contract value has not been disclosed. That suggests the test is not just a demonstration. It is feeding into an early deployment path. And for India’s defence industry, the successful drop trial gives a concrete reference point for future long-range air-to-ground weapons now in the pipeline.
