Gauteng has 405,627 available school places for the 2027 academic year, but thousands of parents have packed their applications into a limited number of popular schools, leaving the province facing another placement squeeze. The Gauteng Department of Education received 805,688 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8, covering 346,877 individual learners after duplicate applications were counted out.
Pressure in the wrong places
Education MEC Lebogang Maile said on Sunday that the problem is not a simple shortage of classrooms. It is where those classrooms sit.
“We have 405,627 available spaces. So in theory, we don’t have a problem,” Maile said at a briefing on online admissions for 2027. But he said demand is heavily concentrated around certain schools and areas, leaving some campuses overwhelmed while others nearby still have room.
The figures point to a familiar headache in Gauteng, South Africa’s most populous and economically important province. Families keep chasing the same schools, especially in and around Pretoria and parts of Johannesburg’s east and south, even as the system has capacity elsewhere.
Popular schools draw thousands
The demand gap is stark in Grade 8. Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West drew 3,462 applications, the highest number recorded. Alberton High School followed with 2,756, while Katlehong Secondary School received 2,747. Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation got 2,573.
On the primary side, Laerskool Akasia in Pretoria North received 1,355 Grade 1 applications, followed by Palmridge Primary School with 1,330 and Alston Primary School with 1,207. Maile said the pressure on a handful of schools shows the province cannot keep responding by simply adding more places without rethinking how existing public school space is used.
That challenge is not unique to Gauteng. Education systems from London to Lagos have faced similar imbalances, where parents cluster around perceived better-performing or more convenient schools, pushing admissions systems into chaos even when total capacity looks adequate on paper. The difference in Gauteng is scale: more than 805,000 applications for two entry grades alone.
What the province may try next
The department said it is looking at ways to make better use of current capacity while exploring new solutions for crowded areas. Those options include public-private partnerships, mobile classrooms and e-learning.
Maile’s comments followed the closure of the online admissions window at midnight on Friday. The province will now work through the applications and placement process before the 2027 school year begins.
Opposition pressure is already building. The Democratic Alliance has called for the application period to open by April and run until September, arguing that Gauteng left itself too little time to handle technical problems and placement disputes after opening the process only after June 2026.
For now, the hard number remains the same: 805,688 applications chasing 405,627 places.
