A Malaysia Airlines jet carrying 186 people diverted to Chennai on Monday after the crew reported trouble with one of its engines. The flight landed safely, and airport authorities declared a full emergency as a precaution.

The aircraft, MH156, was operating the Kuala Lumpur-to-Jeddah route when it was turned back to Chennai following a technical problem involving Engine No. 2. Airport staff activated emergency response teams, while operations at Chennai airport continued normally. No injuries were reported.

Safe landing, emergency response

The plane touched down in Chennai without incident, according to airport officials. A senior official said the landing was smooth. Briefly, the airport went into full emergency mode.

Once on the ground, the aircraft was moved to a parking slot with the help of an aircraft tow vehicle. Passengers were given accommodation at the airport while the airline and technical teams assessed the jet and the engine issue.

What officials said

Chennai airport said the emergency preparations were triggered after the reported technical fault, but normal operations were not disrupted. Malaysia Airlines and relevant technical personnel were carrying out further checks on the aircraft.

The exact nature of the engine failure has not been disclosed. The airline has only said the problem involved Engine No. 2. That leaves the investigation open, and the plane remains under assessment.

Chennai sees another diversion

The incident came as another flight, operated by Air India Express from Tiruchirappalli to Singapore, was also diverted to Chennai because of a technical issue. Airport authorities declared a local standby in response.

For passengers, the landing in Chennai ended safely. For the airline, the next step is a technical review of the aircraft before it can return to service. “Further assessment of the aircraft and the technical issue is being carried out by the airline and relevant technical teams,” a spokesperson said.
