DÜSSELDORF — Japan vs Ecuador ended 0-0 in a men’s international friendly in Düsseldorf, Germany, after both teams failed to break through in a match that stayed tight from kickoff to the final whistle.

The result leaves the head-to-head level in their most recent meetings and gives both teams a clear read on where they stand before the next round of international fixtures. Japan had the sharper numbers in attack, but Ecuador held firm and took a point from a difficult opponent.

Japan vs Ecuador stays locked at 0-0

ESPN’s match data showed Japan finished with four shots on target, compared with two for Ecuador. Japan also held 50% possession, the same as Ecuador, which points to a game that never tilted fully to one side.

The lineups reflected that balance. Japan lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with players including Kaoru Mitoma, Takumi Minamino, Ritsu Doan and Takefusa Kubo available in the squad, while Ecuador started with Enner Valencia, Pervis Estupiñán, Moisés Caicedo and Piero Hincapié among its key names.

Japan made several changes during the match, including A. Ueda for K. Furuhashi in the 45th minute, Y. Soma for K. Mitoma in the 66th, W. Endo for G. Shibasaki in the 67th and D. Kamada for T. Minamino in the 67th. Japan also brought on J. Ito for R. Doan in the 83rd and M. Yoshida for Y. Nagatomo in the 84th.

Ecuador answered with substitutions of its own. J. Sarmiento replaced R. Ibarra in the 45th minute, N. Angulo came on for J. Cifuentes in the 76th, E. Valencia replaced Á. Mena in the 76th and D. Reasco entered for M. Estrada in stoppage time.

What the draw means for both sides

The numbers suggest neither team could turn control into a decisive edge. Japan recorded eight shots, while Ecuador finished with four. Japan also earned seven corners, compared with four for Ecuador, but the chances never translated into a goal.

That matters because both sides used the friendly to test shape, depth and finishing. Japan arrived with a lineup built around structure and possession, while Ecuador leaned on a compact defensive setup and direct transitions. The draw gives both coaching staffs evidence, not comfort.

For Ecuador, the clean sheet will help after another meeting with Japan that ended without a winner. ESPN’s head-to-head section showed the teams have now split their latest results evenly in the broader picture, including a 1-1 draw in the 2019 Copa América group stage and a 0-1 Ecuador win in a previous friendly in Japan.

Japan’s bench also included players such as G. Haraguchi, R. Hatate, T. Kubo, Y. Nakayama, H. Sakai and E. Kawashima, underlining the depth Hajime Moriyasu could turn to in the match. Ecuador had D. Palacios, L. León, P. Delgado, X. Arreaga, C. Gruezo, G. Valle and W. Pacho among its reserves.

Even without a goal, the game delivered a useful snapshot: Japan controlled territory, Ecuador absorbed pressure, and neither side found the final touch that would have decided it. The scoreline stayed blank, and the match ended where it began.
