Rockstar Games has called the Grand Theft Auto VI leaks “heartbreaking for our team” after days of footage from an apparently playable build circulated online. The studio’s statement came as another clip appeared, showing Jason attempting a carjacking and trying to evade police.
The leaks have exposed gameplay before Rockstar’s planned official presentation, and the studio apologized to fans for the delay in sharing more about the game. A person or organization calling itself CyberLeek has claimed responsibility for the footage, which was also used in part to promote a cryptocurrency.
In the latest video described by The Verge, Jason takes a box Chevy-like vehicle marked with a “Rideout Customs” logo across its back window. Lucia, the game’s other main character, appears briefly in what looks like a cutscene near the end.
Rockstar says leaks affected the intended reveal
Rockstar published its statement on social media on Wednesday morning, following days of repeated leaks. The studio said the footage was not how it intended for players to see the game after a long wait.
“We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know,” the studio said.
The statement acknowledged that spoilers could affect the experience Rockstar had planned for the game. The studio also thanked community members who had sent messages of support, saying those words had meant a great deal to its team.
For players, the immediate consequence is that some gameplay details have surfaced outside the official rollout, while the studio has yet to share the planned extended look described in its statement. Rockstar urged fans to wait longer to experience the game themselves rather than rely on the leaked clips.
Take-Two Interactive, the publisher, has asked to subpoena Microsoft and Discord over content it says infringes copyright. The request is aimed at identifying the source of the leaks, according to The Verge.
Official footage and release plans
Rockstar said it was excited for fans to see an extended look, acknowledging that it had taken longer than intended to prepare. The source report said the presentation was scheduled to stream exclusively on Netflix at 3PM ET on Thursday evening, before appearing on YouTube six hours later.
The company’s statement did not detail how the leaked footage would affect the planned presentation. It said the studio remained determined to deliver the game at the level players expect and deserve.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19th, according to the report. Rockstar asked fans to wait until then to experience the game for themselves.
