Geelong secured contracted ruckman Rowan Marshall from St Kilda on Thursday, completing a trade that gives the Saints pick No.14 in this year’s draft. The deal also sends Geelong a third-round selection in 2028, as the Cats add an experienced ruckman and St Kilda gains another first-round pick.

The move grants Marshall’s request to leave after he sought a trade for the second straight off-season. St Kilda had initially wanted a player included in the deal, but the clubs reached an agreement without one.

Marshall has played 177 games for the Saints. He will continue his career at Geelong after a decade with the club.

“I have loved my time at the Saints and always wanted to leave the club in a better place through my contributions on the field,” Marshall said.

He also thanked St Kilda’s supporters, coaches, teammates and staff, saying their support had helped him build lasting memories at the club.

St Kilda gets another first-round pick

St Kilda football boss Lenny Hayes said the club wanted adequate compensation before agreeing to release Marshall, who remained contracted. The pick adds to the Saints’ existing pick eight.

“We are pleased to have achieved this by bringing in another first round selection, alongside our existing pick 8,” Hayes said.

Hayes said St Kilda respected Marshall’s desire for a fresh environment but had sought a fair return for a player who had performed consistently over the past decade. He thanked Marshall for his contributions on and off the field and wished him well at Geelong.

The trade gives St Kilda a draft selection rather than a player, the point that had held up negotiations. The outcome also leaves the Saints with two first-round picks, giving the club more draft capital as it reshapes its list.

Geelong adds experience to its ruck group

Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie said the Cats were pleased to bring in Marshall and highlighted his experience in the ruck and key-position stocks.

“We are delighted to bring in someone of Rowan's calibre, he is a talented player who brings a wealth of experience to our ruck and key position stocks,” Mackie said.

Marshall’s arrival follows Geelong’s recruitment of Jordan Ridley and Toby Greene across free agency and the trade period, according to AFL.com.au. The club described Marshall as a player who can contribute around stoppages.

For Geelong, the deal addresses the ruck position with a player who has spent a decade at St Kilda. For St Kilda, the return is a first-round draft pick rather than the player it had sought during negotiations. That difference shaped the final trade.

Marshall said he leaves with good memories of the Saints and wished the club well for the future. His move is complete, with Geelong sending pick No.14 and receiving Marshall alongside a third-round selection in 2028.
