The Montreal Canadiens sent Jayden Struble to Nashville after leaving him out of the lineup against the Predators on Thursday. Nashville acquired the defenseman for a 2027 second-round pick, the teams announced Friday.

The deal gives the Predators another option on defense and adds a future draft selection to Montreal’s assets. Struble, 25, had appeared in three games this season for the Canadiens, recording no points and averaging 12:05 minutes per game, according to Sportsnet.

Struble did not play when the teams met Thursday. His move follows a season in which his opportunities in Montreal had been limited, ESPN reported.

The selection belongs to the Vegas Golden Knights, ESPN said. Nashville had also added Montreal prospect William Trudeau off waivers earlier in the week.

A limited role in Montreal

The Canadiens drafted Struble in the second round in 2019. He appeared in 174 games for Montreal, scoring seven goals and recording 35 points while averaging 14:58 minutes per game, Sportsnet reported.

Montreal signed him to a two-year contract extension worth $2.825 million, with an average annual value of $1.4125 million. The agreement runs through the 2026-27 season and followed arbitration proceedings, Sportsnet said.

ESPN reported that Struble had been a healthy scratch during the past two seasons, limiting his chances to establish a regular place in the lineup. The Canadiens also have defensemen Kaiden Guhle returning from offseason adductor surgery and prospect David Reinbacher nearing a move from the AHL to the NHL, according to ESPN.

For Montreal, the trade brings a second-round pick while opening space among its defensemen. That gives the Canadiens a future selection to use in the draft or as part of another transaction, though the sources did not report any further move tied to the deal.

For Nashville, Struble adds experience at the NHL level. His 174 appearances with Montreal give the Predators a defenseman who has already played regularly in the league, while his limited role this season leaves his place in Nashville’s lineup to be determined.

Montreal had a 1-2-1 record to start the season, while Nashville stood at 2-1-1, ESPN reported. Struble has recorded 35 points in 174 games with the Canadiens.
