NEW ORLEANS — Kyler Murray’s legs helped Minnesota keep its unbeaten start intact, as the quarterback led the Vikings to a 23-13 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. He scrambled seven times for 54 yards in his third start with Minnesota, converting three third downs with his runs.
The Vikings improved to five wins without a loss. Murray completed 24 of 30 passes for 229 yards and one touchdown, while Minnesota played most of the game without four injured offensive starters: left tackle Christian Darrisaw, guard Donovan Jackson, receiver Jordan Addison and tight end T.J. Hockenson.
It was a different kind of lift.
Murray also extended plays outside the pocket, connecting with receiver Jeshaun Jones for 32 yards and running back DeeJay Dallas for 11. His mobility helped the offense sustain drives as the Vikings worked through the absences along the line and at receiver.
“I think that's what today called for,” Murray said. “Not trying to go out and force it or anything like that. When it's there, it's there.”
The quarterback said those plays sparked the offense at key moments. He added that he was not looking to abandon the rhythm of the passing game, but would run when the opportunity came.
Kyler Murray finds his footing in Minnesota’s offense
Murray completed his first 12 passes and later threw a 15-yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson in the third quarter. Jefferson made the catch against triple coverage after returning from a one-game absence because of an ankle injury.
“It was a great throw,” Jefferson said. “I mean, there was nothing else that I could do besides just put my hands up and make the grab.”
Jefferson finished with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. He credited Murray for giving him the chance to make the play, saying he “definitely wasn't the most open.”
The rushing performance marked a notable change in Murray’s approach. ESPN reported that he had not scrambled at least seven times in a game since Week 14 of the 2020 season. Injuries and changes in scheme had reduced how often he ran, despite his early-career profile as a dual-threat quarterback.
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell has spoken about Murray’s ability to gain first downs with his legs. O'Connell said the quarterback’s running and third-down conversions help the team’s broader offensive plans.
“It's great to see Kyler running the offense, but also we're seeing his own spin on it,” O'Connell said.
Murray’s passing has also settled into a more consistent rhythm. Dating back to the third quarter in Week 4, he has completed 40 of his past 48 passes, according to ESPN.
O'Connell pointed to game experience as a factor in the quarterback’s progress, contrasting regular-season reps with practice and training camp work. He praised Murray’s poise and decision-making against New Orleans, calling the performance something the team could build on.
The win came in front of Drew Brees, who received his Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence at halftime, according to the report. Minnesota now has a bye week before facing the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.
Murray’s seven scrambles produced 54 yards.
