Tate McRae has moved on from the era of “Sports Car” with a new single built around a different image. “Housewife” arrived with a music video on Friday, Oct. 16, as the first single from her forthcoming fourth studio album.

The release gives fans McRae’s first new music since her 2025 album So Close to What and begins the new era she had been teasing for months. The video shows the Canadian singer lounging poolside and on a yacht with a love interest, according to UPI.

McRae announced the single on social media with artwork showing her in a red bikini beside a stroller full of cash. The post’s caption read, “Housewife. Out 10.15,” followed by a diamond ring emoji, Yahoo reported. Billboard said the song and video arrived on Thursday night, Oct. 15.

The release is a shift in presentation, but McRae had already been planting clues. The song’s title appeared at the start of her Lollapalooza set, she told Billboard, though fans did not recognize its significance at the time.

Clues in the Lollapalooza performance

McRae closed her headlining set at the Chicago festival in August by climbing into a bathtub filled with gold paint during “Sports Car.” She emerged coated in the metallic liquid as fireworks went off above the festival, a striking finale that later looked like a signal of change, according to Yahoo and Billboard.

The show also included Greco-Roman-inspired columns and a visual concept built around “The Anatomy of a Popstar,” Yahoo reported. Billboard said a clip with a ticking clock and an unreleased song snippet appeared during the performance, adding to hints that McRae was preparing to move into a new phase.

She discussed the meaning of “Housewife” during an appearance on The Tonight Show earlier in October. Billboard reported that McRae described it as a song about “a woman who can’t be contained.”

That description gives the track’s domestic title a different edge. UPI reported that the lyrics include: “I just wanna make a lot of money, be my own housewife / You, you, you, you could be the one I'm calling honey.” The music video places McRae poolside and aboard a yacht with a love interest.

A new chapter after chart success

The new single follows a strong run for So Close to What. Billboard reported that the album was released in February 2025 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning 177,000 total album-equivalent units, according to Luminate.

Yahoo reported that the album debuted at No. 1 in March 2025 and sent 11 tracks onto the Billboard Hot 100. “Sports Car” peaked at No. 16. McRae later released “What I Want,” her collaboration with Morgan Wallen, which debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in May 2025, and “Tit for Tat,” which peaked at No. 3.

Those chart results frame the stakes of the new release: “Housewife” is not simply a standalone return, but the first public musical step toward McRae’s next album. The single’s arrival also follows her recognition as Billboard’s Hitmaker recipient at the 2026 Billboard Women in Music ceremony, Yahoo reported.

For now, McRae has released the lead single and its video; the sources identify the album as forthcoming but do not give a release date.
