Photos scattered across a computer and cloud services can be hard to browse in one place. Microsoft’s redesigned Photos app for Windows 11 now brings images and videos from a PC, OneDrive and iCloud into a combined gallery, alongside a rebuilt editor and viewer.

The update is part of a broader set of Windows 11 changes aimed at improving performance and refreshing key apps. Microsoft says the new gallery is designed to make it easier to find and manage media without switching between apps or devices. The company has not specified a rollout date in the supplied information.

One gallery, with setup required

Users must enable Camera Backup in the OneDrive mobile app on an iOS or Android device and set up iCloud for Windows to bring those libraries into Photos. Once connected, the app lets people browse by date, create and share albums, and search using descriptions or the people shown in images.

The gallery can also display files online or offline. Microsoft says photos will remain available on the device without an internet connection. That could make the app a more practical hub for people whose libraries span a Windows PC, Apple’s cloud service and Microsoft’s storage platform.

The redesign also targets speed. Microsoft says the app launches and scrolls more smoothly, while its new editor opens 25 percent faster than before. Editing tools are grouped under Crop, Enhance, Repair and Stylize.

Performance claims extend beyond Photos

The wider Windows update also includes operating-system changes. Microsoft claims Windows 11 can be up to 20 percent more responsive across core features, including its Edge browser. The company says memory handling has been adjusted for PCs with 8GB of RAM, allowing actively used data to stay in memory rather than being moved to storage, while widgets load only when needed.

Microsoft also points to reliability work involving Bluetooth headphone connections and driver quality, developed with hardware makers. The Photos editor adds support for formats including HEIC, commonly used by iPhones, and WebP. The app also preserves HDR quality, according to the supplied details.

For users, the next step is whether the gallery and performance changes arrive on their devices and work smoothly across their connected libraries.
