Apple’s latest software update brings a colorful response to music and other audio on more HomePod models. HomePod 27.2 adds Sound Glow to the second-generation HomePod and original HomePod mini, extending a feature introduced for HomePod mini 2.

The update is available as a release candidate for developers and public beta testers, and Apple is expected to launch it next week, according to MacRumors. Once installed, users can enable Sound Glow in HomePod settings; those with HomePods paired to an Apple TV can also switch it on or off through Apple TV Control Center.

The original HomePod is excluded. That distinction matters for owners checking whether the new light effect will work on their speaker: the feature supports the second-generation HomePod, the original HomePod mini and HomePod mini 2, but not the first-generation HomePod.

How Sound Glow works

When audio plays, the top of a supported HomePod lights up with colors that pulse in sync. The effect draws its colors from album artwork, making the speaker’s illuminated surface respond to what is playing rather than showing a fixed light.

Sound Glow works with songs, podcasts and Apple’s ambient music feature, MacRumors reported. The report did not describe additional setup requirements beyond enabling the feature in settings or, for speakers paired with Apple TV, using Control Center.

For listeners, the change adds a visual cue to audio playback without requiring a separate display. Its practical reach depends on the speaker model: owners of the original HomePod will not get Sound Glow through Software 27.2, while users of the other supported models can enable it after updating.

Other changes in Software 27.2

The update also adds support for using HomePods as a Mac’s default speaker. It can also let HomePods or HomePod mini 2 speakers serve as surround sound for an Apple TV.

Apple is adding a Lock Controls feature as well. It disables touch interactions with the top of the HomePod, giving users an option to prevent controls on the speaker itself from responding to touch.

MacRumors reported that Software 27.2 remains at the release-candidate stage for developers and public beta testers, with a wider launch expected next week. Sound Glow is not available on the original HomePod.
