Apple Plans Horizontal Reachability for iPhone Duo Later This Year

Apple says iPhone Duo will add Reachability later this year, giving users a way to bring interface elements near the screen’s left or right edge within reach. The feature is not ready for the device’s launch this Friday, according to 9to5Mac.

The change is aimed at a practical concern: both iPhone Duo displays are wider than those on other iPhones, and some users may find edge controls difficult to reach with one hand. Reachability will shift the interface horizontally rather than vertically.

How Reachability will work on iPhone Duo

On current iPhones, users activate Reachability by swiping down at the bottom of the screen. The gesture moves the interface down, bringing items near the top closer to a user’s thumb.

Apple’s planned version for iPhone Duo changes the direction. A tap will make content along the left or right edge easier to access, according to 9to5Mac’s report. The outlet said the feature is intended to help people with smaller hands reach either side of the display.

That matters because the device’s interface appears to favor right-handed use, 9to5Mac reported, citing reviewer Chance Miller. Horizontal Reachability could give users who struggle with controls at either edge another way to operate the phone one-handed.

A small change, with a clear purpose.

A delayed launch feature

Reachability will not be available when iPhone Duo launches this Friday. Apple says it plans to add the feature later this year, but the report does not give a specific release date.

Reachability has a longer history on the iPhone. Apple introduced the feature in 2014 with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, as the company’s phones grew larger. Its original purpose was to move upper-screen controls lower; the new approach described for iPhone Duo addresses reach across the display instead.

The report comes from 9to5Mac, which said it confirmed the device’s right-handed interface preference in Chance Miller’s review. It did not specify which software update will deliver the horizontal control or whether users will be able to customize how it behaves.

For people concerned about reaching the wider display, the promised feature offers a direct software adjustment rather than a change to the device’s physical size. Apple’s stated timing remains only “later this year,” with no more precise date provided.
