Your Your Projects Luxembourg

As Halloween season puts bats in the spotlight, Luxembourg is backing practical work to protect wildlife and prepare cities for climate change. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency highlighted two EU-supported projects: LIFE Bats & Birds and CLIMABOROUGH.

The projects address different challenges, but both link European funding to work on the ground. One focuses on nesting and roosting places for target bat and bird species; the other helps cities test ways to move towards climate neutrality.

Your Your Projects Luxembourg: wildlife and climate action

LIFE Bats & Birds receives an EU contribution of €2.5 million through the LIFE programme. Its goal is to improve the conservation status of target bat and bird species in Luxembourg by creating and restoring suitable nesting and roosting sites.

In eastern Luxembourg, the project has installed its first wildlife towers as potential bat roosting sites. The structures offer places for bats to shelter and rest. The agency described them as a kind of “Bed & Breakfast” for the animals.

That is a tangible form of conservation: the work centers on habitats and safe places for wildlife, rather than only broad biodiversity goals. The agency said bats play an important part in healthy ecosystems, while the project aims to give selected species better conditions to thrive.

For local communities, the immediate relevance is the focus on the places where wildlife can nest and roost. The source does not specify how many towers have been installed or how many species the project targets.

Climate-neutral cities

CLIMABOROUGH tackles a separate challenge. The Horizon Europe project has received about €11.0 million in EU funding and supports cities as they test and scale up new approaches to climate-neutral urban transformation.

The agency said cities need to reduce emissions, improve energy use, rethink mobility, use data more effectively and involve local communities. The project’s stated approach is to help urban areas test ideas and expand those that can support a move towards climate neutrality.

That work connects climate policy with how urban areas function in daily life, including mobility, public services and neighbourhoods. The agency said city-focused initiatives can bring the climate transition closer to residents and affect the quality of life in those places.

The agency also pointed to risks including floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and sea level rise as challenges facing communities across Europe. It presented cooperation as important because the transition involves several connected aspects of city life.

The two projects therefore offer distinct forms of action in Luxembourg: wildlife towers and restored habitats for conservation, alongside city-level testing aimed at climate neutrality. LIFE Bats & Birds has an EU contribution of €2.5 million.
