Storm Boelo has brought heavy rain and stronger winds to parts of the UK, raising concerns about travel to Old Trafford. Manchester United’s Premier League match against Bournemouth remains scheduled to go ahead, while supporters have been warned that journeys may take longer.
A yellow weather warning covers nearby Merseyside until 11pm on Sunday. The Met Office forecast heavy rain and strengthening winds, while the latest forecast cited by the London Evening Standard said the worst of the storm was moving away from Manchester.
Travel disruption is already expected. Improvement works mean no trams will run on the Altrincham, Trafford Park and Eccles lines, and services on the Airport and East Didsbury lines will be reduced.
Transport for Greater Manchester said replacement buses and dedicated shuttle services would operate before and after the match. The transport authority also advised supporters travelling from Manchester Airport or East Didsbury to use tram services to and from Firswood.
“We suggest departing an hour earlier than normal to ensure you arrive at the ground on time,” a Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said.
Storm warning and Old Trafford travel plans
The match has not been postponed, according to the London Evening Standard’s report. Officials still need to consider supporter safety and the potential effects of weather around Old Trafford before deciding whether it is safe to proceed.
That distinction matters for fans making the trip: the fixture is still on, but the route to the stadium may be less straightforward than usual. With some tram lines closed and others running reduced services, supporters may need to use the announced replacement transport and allow additional time.
The Met Office forecast, updated at 4am on Sunday, said: “Strong winds continue as Storm Boelo slowly clears away”. The report said stronger winds would continue across northern parts of the UK.
Showers and longer periods of rain were expected mainly across Scotland and Northern Ireland, while other areas were forecast to see some sunshine. Scattered showers could develop in western and northern parts of the country, with temperatures expected to remain around average for late October.
The report did not say the Bournemouth fixture had been called off. The latest stated plan remains that the match will go ahead, subject to officials’ assessment of conditions and safety around the ground.
