Apple’s first OLED iPad mini brings a display upgrade, but buyers choosing the lower storage options get a different A20 Pro chip configuration. The new model, unveiled by Apple, has an 8.5-inch OLED screen and pre-orders start October 28.

The difference is in the processor. The 128GB and 256GB versions have a five-core CPU, while the 512GB model has six CPU cores. Apple’s specifications also list one fewer efficiency core and half the NPU power on the lower-storage versions; other specifications are identical.

The tablet uses an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2,316 x 1,512 pixels and a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple has not added ProMotion to its smallest iPad. The screen has thinner bezels and peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits, and buyers can opt for nano-texture glass intended to reduce glare.

It supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and includes a landscape 12MP Center Stage camera. Apple also moved the dual speakers beneath the display, calling the arrangement an “Acoustic Display” setup. GSMArena reported that the design uses custom tweeters hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure, and said it is reported to deliver punchier bass and more volume.

A different sound setup. And a thinner tablet.

The iPad mini (2026) measures 5.4mm thick and weighs 255 grams. Its predecessor measured 6.3mm and weighed 297 grams, according to GSMArena. The new model also adds Wi-Fi 7, while its cellular version supports 5G on sub-6 GHz through eSIM and Apple’s C2 modem. Apple lists IP67 ingress protection.

Battery, connectivity and pricing

The new mini has an 18.9Wh battery and charges through USB-C. Apple claims it can reach a 50% charge in 30 minutes with a power adapter rated at 35W or higher. The USB-C port transfers data at USB 3 speeds, up to 10Gb/s.

Apple will offer the tablet in Midnight and Starlight. According to GSMArena, the 128GB Wi-Fi-only version starts at $699/€749/£699. The 256GB model is priced at $799/€879/£799, while the 512GB version costs $999/€1,129/£999.

The storage choice now affects more than capacity: the two lower configurations have less CPU and NPU capability, according to the specifications reported by GSMArena. Buyers comparing prices will need to weigh that hardware difference against the larger storage tier.
