Barbara Barrie, the barbara barrie oscar-nominated breaking star known for playing a spirited mother in Breaking Away, has died at 95. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, told The New York Times that Barrie had terminal cancer and that her death was medically assisted.

Breaking Away brought Barrie an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress. She later returned to the role in a television series based on the film, earning an Emmy nomination.

Her career ranged from Broadway musicals to detective comedy and family films. Barrie also wrote children’s books and books about her experience with colorectal cancer.

From Broadway to Breaking Away

Barrie appeared in the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, a musical that examined relationships and commitment. Her performance in the 1970 production earned her a Tony Award nomination. She also appeared in Neil Simon’s California Suite.

On screen, her work in One Potato, Two Potato earned her the best actress prize at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. The film told an interracial romance in which Barrie’s character faces prejudice while falling in love with a Black man.

Then came Breaking Away. Barrie played the blue-collar mother of a young man passionate about cycling, a role that made her widely known. The film received her best supporting actress nomination for its 1979 release, and the television adaptation followed in 1980.

The role showed the range behind the familiar on-screen mother: Barrie could anchor a family story while holding her own in a cast. For audiences discovering her through Breaking Away, her credits offer a path into decades of stage and screen work.

A career across television and film

Barrie also appeared on the 1970s detective sitcom Barney Miller as the title character’s wife. Her other film credits included Judy Berlin, The Bell Jar and Disney’s Hercules. She appeared on Law & Order and Suddenly Susan as well.

Those roles connected her with different kinds of viewers, from fans of stage musicals to audiences who knew her through television comedy and drama. Her screen presence often came through supporting parts, but the recognition extended across major awards: Cannes, Tony, Emmy and Oscar nominations or honors.

Her writing offered another way to tell personal stories. Barrie published children’s books and wrote Second Act and Don’t Die of Embarrassment, which examined her battle with colorectal cancer.

Harnick’s account to The New York Times described the circumstances of her mother’s death in direct terms: Barrie had terminal cancer, and her death was “medically assisted.”
