Russell Brand Says Friends Distanced Themselves After Allegations

LONDON — Russell Brand told a jury that friends had distanced themselves after allegations of historical sex offences emerged, as he gave evidence at Southwark Crown Court. The comedian and actor denies three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault involving six women between 1999 and 2009.

His testimony brought the effect of the case on his personal relationships into the courtroom, while prosecutors questioned changes in his account of the allegations. Brand said he had allowed his fame to help facilitate sexual access, which he acknowledged was wrong.

“It was devastating,” Brand said when asked about the documentary and its effect on relationships with friends and colleagues, according to the BBC. Asked whether anyone he knew had agreed to appear in court on his behalf, he said: “I have not.”

The trial is continuing. Jurors have been told they are likely to begin considering their verdicts next Tuesday, according to The Age.

Brand acknowledges his past conduct

Brand, 51, gave evidence as his defence case began. He told the court he had spent much of his life being persuasive, seductive, begging and flirting, describing his past conduct as reckless philandering and idiocy.

“As I became more successful and famous, I was very comfortable allowing that to facilitate sexual access, which I agree was wrong,” he told the court, as quoted by The Age.

He also said consent was essential. “Consent is fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed more important than sex itself,” Brand told his barrister, Ian Winter, KC, while discussing an allegation.

Brand denies all the charges. He said he did not remember incidents involving three complainants, while disputing the accounts of the other alleged rapes. The charges concern allegations made by six women over a period spanning a decade.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones questioned why Brand had told police in four interviews between 2023 and 2025 that he had not previously been able to recall the women or incidents. She suggested that he had constructed his account around details given by complainants.

Brand described what he called an “escalating recollection” during the process. He acknowledged that parts of his recollection included small details that were inconsistent, according to The Age.

Allegations and the effect on relationships

Prosecutors allege Brand raped a woman after meeting her at a Labour Party conference in 1999. They also allege that he forced a woman to perform oral sex in a London bar toilet in 2004 and molested another woman at a radio station in 2004 or 2005.

Other allegations concern an attempted assault at MTV Europe in London in 2001 and an alleged rape at Brand’s home in 2009 after a woman had agreed to consensual sex. The final allegation involves an assault during a recording project. Brand denies the offences.

The BBC reported that the jury had heard the complainants approached detectives after a documentary aired in 2023, alongside newspaper reports containing allegations from other women who are not part of the trial. Brand said the documentary and reporting had affected his friendships and working relationships.

He also told the court that a hospital had barred him from staying with his son while the child underwent open-heart surgery. Brand said the decision followed material published in the public eye, according to the BBC.

The Age reported that Brand described his 14-month marriage to US singer Katy Perry in 2010 as having brought him “staggering fame”. In court, he said the case had consumed his life and that he had focused on it at the expense of his marriage, children and health.

Brand’s account remains contested in court. The jury is expected to consider its verdicts next Tuesday, London time.
