Nissan’s clever 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid uses a gasoline engine as a generator, with electric motors driving the wheels. The system gives the crossover an electric-car-style driving setup without requiring drivers to plug it in, and Nissan lists 225 horsepower in combined system power.

The Rogue Hybrid pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a 202 horsepower front electric motor and a 134 horsepower rear motor. The engine produces electricity rather than directly turning the wheels, while a 1.67 kWh lithium battery forms part of the system.

That distinction separates Nissan’s approach from the parallel hybrids common in the market, where an engine and electric motor can both contribute to moving the vehicle. In the Rogue Hybrid, the electric motors provide the drive; the gasoline engine works as a generator.

How does the Rogue Hybrid generate power?

The engine supplies electricity to the electric drive system rather than driving the wheels. The arrangement is a series hybrid, a design Nissan has developed through its e-Power technology.

The setup means the vehicle does not need to be plugged in to operate as an electrified car. Drivers still use gasoline, but the engine’s role differs from that of a conventional hybrid powertrain. Nissan specifies a direct-drive transmission and dual-motor all-wheel drive.

The power figures reflect separate components: a generator rated at 146 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque, a 202-horsepower front motor and a 134-horsepower rear motor. Nissan gives the combined system output as 225 horsepower.

What are the fuel economy and prices?

Nissan lists fuel economy at 41 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway and 38 MPG combined. The Rogue Hybrid weighs 4,107 pounds.

The base price is $35,490, plus a $1,595 destination fee. The tested SR Tech Package version was priced at $43,065 before the destination fee. Those figures give buyers a clear starting point for comparing the hybrid’s cost with other vehicles, though the listed prices differ by trim and do not include the fee in the tested price.

The model sits within Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s global strategy announced in 2016. Nissan describes e-Power as a central part of that effort, built around a series-hybrid design.

For buyers weighing an electrified vehicle, the distinction matters in daily use: the Rogue Hybrid does not require charging from an external plug, while its gasoline engine supplies power to the electric drive system. Its listed combined fuel economy is 38 MPG.
