Deadly strikes in Gaza have killed eight people, including a four-year-old boy, according to local hospitals, adding to the toll despite a ceasefire that began in October last year. The reported deaths were in Gaza City and Khan Younis, where separate attacks hit civilians and police officers.

Hospital officials in Gaza City said a missile struck people gathered near Cairo School in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood, killing three, among them the child. In the southern city of Khan Younis, Gaza’s Hamas-run interior ministry said a drone attack killed five police officers in Al-Mawasi while they were on routine duty.

What is known about the attacks?

The Israeli military said it had conducted two strikes against people it described as military operatives. It did not provide evidence or further details about the targets.

The accounts differ on the people hit in Khan Younis: the interior ministry described them as police officers carrying out their duties, while the military characterized its targets as military operatives. The statements did not resolve that difference.

Outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, men gathered to pray beside two body bags and the child’s small body, wrapped in a white towel, video showed. Ali Oweis, whose son and grandchild were killed, said they had been sitting in a tent when the missile hit.

“There is no ceasefire; the war is ongoing, don't you see?” Oweis said.

Deaths reported despite ceasefire

The reported fatalities underline the continuing danger for people in Gaza even with the ceasefire in place. The strikes affected two separate areas, and the accounts identify both civilians near a school and officers in Al-Mawasi among those killed.

For families and residents, the immediate impact is stark: a child was among the dead in Gaza City, while five people were killed in the southern attack. The Israeli military’s account points to military targets, but it has not presented supporting evidence or further information about either operation.

Local civil defense officials also reported eight deaths across the two cities. Hospitals and emergency services attributed three fatalities to Gaza City and five to Khan Younis.
