UMY’s Communication Studies program staged JalaRun Fest 2026 in Bantul, blending a 6-km fun run with local culture and rural scenery to promote healthier habits.

BANTUL — The Communication Studies program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) held JalaRun Fest 2026 in Bantul Regency on Sunday (6/28/2026), turning a fun run into a public campaign for healthier living and local cultural pride.

The event drew hundreds of participants and also gave a lift to small businesses around the campus area. That matters. A health campaign can fade fast if it feels stiff or preachy, but a run with a rural route, local food stalls, and a playful cultural theme gave people a reason to show up.

Why JalaRun Fest 2026 Matters for Public Health

Event coordinator Selly Defri Antari said the cultural concept was not limited to traditional arts alone. In this festival, culture also meant building new habits together through running.

UMY wanted to create an environment where exercise is no longer seen as a medical obligation. Instead, it should feel like a lifestyle choice tied to togetherness and local identity.

“This festival is not only inviting people to exercise, but also building identity through the cultural concept in every activity. We want an event that has identity,” Selly said when met at the venue in Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Sunday (6/28/2026).

The event came out of a student project in UMY’s Communication Studies program using project-based learning. Preparation took more than a month and involved 139 student committee members from the Corporate Communication and Event Management classes.

Dean of the UMY Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Dr. Takdir Ali Mukti, S.Sos., M.Si., who attended the flag-off, praised the students’ initiative. He said learning outside the classroom had a very direct impact.

“This is not just a class assignment for grades. Students learn how to manage conflict, secure sponsors, coordinate with local authorities, and mobilize crowds. The benefits are felt directly by the people of Bantul,” Takdir said during the event.

Rural Route, Hanoman Costume, and a Strong Crowd Turnout

Public response to the sports event was strong. A total of 403 runners registered for the 6-kilometer route, while total visitors at the festival site reached around 600 to 700 people.

Festival Data Category Number / Detail
Registered Runners 403 people
Total Festival Visitors 600–700 people
Local MSMEs Involved 25 food and craft stalls
Active Student Committee Members 139 people
Running Route Distance 6 kilometers

Participants did not face a typical asphalt route under a hot sun. Instead, they ran through a rural path with green rice fields that reflect the southern Yogyakarta landscape. The clean morning air became one of the main attractions, keeping many runners comfortable until the finish line.

One participant from Sleman, Kristiyono, praised the route selection. He said the course was safe and did not disrupt Bantul’s main traffic flow, which usually gets busy on weekends.

“I’m happy the campus promotes a healthy lifestyle in such a fun way. The route is also very runner-friendly because it passes village roads and rice fields, so it does not disturb other road users too much,” Kristiyono said.

He also ran in a Hanoman costume, complete with white face paint and a long tail. The move was a theatrical way to introduce a local heroic character to younger audiences who are often more familiar with foreign pop culture. Along the route, he became an instant attraction for residents watching from the roadside.

Local MSMEs See a Real Boost

The presence of hundreds of runners and visitors gave a direct boost to micro, small, and medium enterprises around UMY and across Bantul. The committee set up a special culinary area filled with local vendors, from traditional herbal drinks to Bantul specialties such as Geplak and mendoan, as well as handmade crafts.

Money circulation during the event was estimated in the tens of millions of rupiah within just half a day. It shows how community sports events, when managed well, can become a practical engine for the local economy.

JalaRun Fest 2026 also featured a best costume contest, a music stage with local Yogyakarta musicians, and prizes for participants who finished the route under the target time.

UMY’s Communication Studies program plans to make the culture-based sports festival an annual agenda. The organizers said cooperation between academics, residents, and local creative businesses needs to keep moving if Yogyakarta wants a healthier and more sustainable community atmosphere.

Quick take:

  • JalaRun Fest 2026 combined running, culture, and public health messaging.
  • The event drew 403 runners and about 600 to 700 visitors in Bantul.
  • Local MSMEs, student learning, and cultural storytelling all gained from the event.
