Kentucky flash floods have killed at least four people and forced an emergency declaration as rescuers race to reach stranded residents.

KENTUCKY — Kentucky flash floods killed at least four people after relentless rain lashed the U.S. state since Wednesday night local time. State officials quickly declared an emergency to speed up evacuations for residents trapped in danger zones.

The flooding has crippled daily life in some of the hardest-hit counties, especially in eastern Kentucky’s hilly terrain. Water surged into neighborhoods fast, swept away vehicles, and pushed residents onto rooftops to survive. Rescue teams are now racing against the clock.

Intense rescue efforts amid fast-moving water

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared the emergency soon after the scale of destruction became clear on the ground. The move was meant to mobilize the National Guard and federal logistics support immediately to the disaster area. Air evacuations by helicopter have become the main option because many roads were cut off by landslides and collapsed bridges.

“We are facing one of the deadliest flash floods in the state’s history,” Beshear said during an emergency news conference. He added that the top priority is saving residents still trapped on rooftops or in trees.

A report from The Times of India said the unusually heavy rain over a short period caused small rivers to overflow almost at once. Kentucky’s steep, mountainous terrain sent floodwater rushing quickly into valley communities. That left people with very little time to get out.

Widespread damage and local risk patterns

Rescue officials on the ground said the death toll could rise, since dozens of people were reported missing by family members. Power was cut to more than 25,000 homes to keep people safe from electrical hazards in muddy floodwaters.

County affected Estimated flooded homes Power status
Perry County More than 1,200 units Out completely
Breathitt County About 950 units Out completely
Clay County More than 600 units Partly out

Infrastructure damage was reported as severe across the three counties. Municipal water lines were contaminated with mud, forcing authorities to distribute bottled water widely to shelters. Several schools and community buildings have been turned into temporary housing for hundreds of people who lost their homes.

More rain possible, more danger ahead

The local weather authority, the National Weather Service, warned that the risk of more rain remains high over the next few days. Residents in low-lying areas were urged to evacuate to emergency shelters before river levels rise again suddenly. Landslides also remain a threat in cliffside areas where the soil is already saturated.

Search operations for missing people along the main river continue, with joint rescue teams working alongside local volunteers. The search is now shifting downstream, where debris from washed-away homes has piled up and could block the flow of water.

The federal government is now reviewing an emergency aid package to support Kentucky’s long-term recovery. The next step will be restoring critical transport routes still brought to a standstill.
