Cristiano Ronaldo’s final FIFA World Cup 2026 ended with Portugal’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the round of 16, closing his World Cup journey without a title.

DALLAS — Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey on the FIFA World Cup 2026 stage has officially ended after Portugal were edged 1-0 by Spain in the round of 16 at Dallas Stadium in the United States on Tuesday local time. Mikel Merino’s late winner crushed the hopes of the Selecao das Quinas.

For Ronaldo, the loss cut even deeper. The 41-year-old had already said this sixth World Cup appearance would be his last. With Portugal eliminated, one of the biggest stars in soccer history closes his World Cup chapter without ever lifting the sport’s most coveted trophy.

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes acknowledged the team’s deep disappointment but urged the squad not to lose belief. “Of course we are sad. We came here with one goal, to become world champions. There is no way we can feel satisfied after failing to achieve that.

I still believe this team has the quality to win the tournament, but we must not lose confidence,” Fernandes said, according to FIFA’s official website.

Portugal arrived in the United States with high expectations. They brought one of the strongest squads in their history, led by Ronaldo and backed by stars including Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva. Even so, that talent was not enough to break Spain’s control.

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said the match against Spain was among the tightest he has played. “We gave everything, but it was not enough. This was one of the tightest matches against Spain since I joined the national team. We had a few chances, but we failed to score. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side,” he said.

Portugal’s unfinished World Cup record

Portugal’s failure in the 2026 edition means they are still chasing their first World Cup title after nine appearances. Their best finish remains third place at their debut in 1966. Since then, generation after generation has come and gone without delivering a world title.

For Ronaldo, the end of his World Cup run marks the close of one of modern soccer’s most iconic chapters. Even without a World Cup trophy, his goal record and influence on the field have secured his place among the greatest players of all time. The next generation will now carry Portugal’s title hopes forward.

Spain, meanwhile, moved into the quarterfinals with a solid defense and growing confidence, ready to continue its push for the title on the biggest stage in world soccer.
