Russell Wins Austrian GP, Cuts Gap to Antonelli by 40 Points

George Russell converted pole position into victory at the Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring, holding off Max Verstappen who finished second, with Kimi Antonelli completing the podium in third.

SPIELBERG — Mercedes driver George Russell delivered a commanding performance to claim victory at the Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Sunday. Russell held off intense pressure from Max Verstappen across the second half of the 71-lap race to seal the win.

Starting from pole, Russell crossed the finish line 1.6 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who settled for second. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, also of Mercedes, completed the podium in third after a tense chase through the closing laps.

The result marks Russell’s second win of the season and slashes his points deficit to Antonelli in the standings to just 40. The race was run in scorching conditions severe enough to trigger an official heat danger status.

Russell’s Dominance and the Pit Stop That Decided It All

Russell made a clean getaway from pole, immediately covering Charles Leclerc into Turn 1. Antonelli, meanwhile, dropped back after a scrappy start and ran wide multiple times in the opening laps.

The real threat came from Verstappen, who charged from fifth on the grid — a consequence of a qualifying crash — and carved his way past Antonelli and Leclerc before engaging in an aggressive duel with Lewis Hamilton.

The race’s pivotal moment arrived on lap 43. Sensing an undercut threat from Red Bull, Mercedes brought Russell in early for fresh rubber. The call proved decisive: Russell emerged with roughly an 11-second buffer once all frontrunners had completed their final stops.

Verstappen’s tires were six laps fresher for the final 20 circuits, but Russell managed his rubber with cool precision all the way to the checkered flag.

Victory’s Relief — and a Hidden Struggle

The win felt especially sweet for Russell, whose last race victory had come at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. What made it more remarkable: his car’s drink system failed completely mid-race in sweltering heat.

“It feels incredible to be back on the top step. This took an enormous effort from the whole team to get our performance back,” Russell said after the race, as reported by Al Jazeera.

He also acknowledged Verstappen’s pace. The Dutchman and Red Bull were widely regarded as the outright fastest package across the entire home weekend at Spielberg.

Fierce Battles Behind the Podium

The fight further back was equally compelling. Oscar Piastri took fourth for McLaren with a measured drive. Hamilton finished fifth after a feisty defensive battle with Verstappen at Turn 6.

Verstappen’s teammate Isack Hadjar came home sixth, adding useful points for Red Bull, who brought a significant upgrade package to Austria. Lando Norris followed in seventh, just ahead of Ferrari’s Leclerc, who struggled to protect his tires on the blistering track surface.

All ten points-scorers had to dig deep through what was a physically punishing race. With the result confirmed, the Formula 1 title battle heads to the legendary Silverstone circuit in Britain more intense than ever.
