Wimbledon 2025 opened with England hit by injuries as Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu withdrew. AI face scanning, fan viewing dilemmas, and anti-doping debate also took center stage.

LONDON — Two of England’s leading players crashed out before Wimbledon 2025 had truly begun. Emma Raducanu withdrew with a stress fracture, and Jack Draper followed with a recurring arm injury — leaving the hosts’ hopes in tatters on day one.

Draper did not hide his disappointment. After forcing himself to stay on court for two sets against Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic, the world No. 12 finally gave in in the third set. His arm would not cooperate. “I tried,” he told reporters briefly after the match, his voice heavy. “But the body has its limits.”

This was not the first time Draper had been let down by his physical condition. Throughout 2025, the 23-year-old Londoner has repeatedly moved in and out of tournament schedules because of recurring health problems. Yet before the grass season began, he was on a short list of title contenders in the view of many European tennis analysts — and his grass-court record this season has been strong.

Raducanu: A Stress Fracture That Could Not Be Ignored

Earlier still, Emma Raducanu announced her withdrawal. Not because she did not want to play in front of her home crowd, but because of a stress fracture — a bone injury caused by repeated pressure that requires complete rest. There was no other option.

Raducanu has long battled physical issues since bursting onto the scene at the 2021 US Open. Her dramatic victory in Flushing Meadows four years ago brought an enormous burden of expectations — and her body has paid the price. Wrist surgery, back problems, and now a stress fracture. For the 22-year-old, Wimbledon this year was meant to be a chance to prove herself in front of her home audience. That will not happen.

Losing Raducanu is more than just losing a big name. She is one of the few British players with a genuine Grand Slam record. Her presence in the draw always boosts local interest — tickets in the opening week usually sell faster when Raducanu is scheduled on Court One.

Why This Is a Major Blow to Wimbledon 2025

Imagine a World Cup without home stars from the opening round. The feeling is similar. Wimbledon sells not only world-class tennis, but also narrative — and the most compelling stories always involve local heroes battling in front of thousands of supporters at SW19.

This year, those hopes rested on those two names. Andy Murray has retired. Neal Skupski and Cameron Norrie are there, but public expectations are clearly not as high as they were for Draper or Raducanu. Without them, BBC television coverage and the British media agenda lose their main attractions in the opening week.

From a commercial standpoint, the numbers are significant. Wimbledon generates around £50 million a year from broadcast rights and sponsorship, and home-player performances directly affect domestic viewing figures. When Tim Henman or Andy Murray were still playing, BBC Wimbledon coverage could draw 8-10 million viewers per session. Without a local draw, those numbers tend to fall sharply in the early rounds.

Injury and Pressure at a Young Age

There is a pattern worth noting. Draper and Raducanu are both under 25, both rose quickly to the top, and both have faced recurring physical injuries. That is no coincidence.

Sports doctors describe this as a consequence of “early specialization” — focusing on tennis from a very young age without enough variety in physical training. A teenage body forced to train hundreds of hours a year with repetitive movements is at high risk of stress injuries to bones and connective tissue. Stress fractures like the one Raducanu has suffered are a classic example.

A senior conditioning coach who works with several ATP players told British media that the modern competition schedule only makes things worse. “The tennis calendar now leaves almost no room for proper recovery. Players fly from Melbourne to Dubai to Monte Carlo to Paris to London in just a few months — and the human body has limits,” one of them told The Guardian earlier this year.

Who Steps Into the Gap?

In the men’s draw, attention now shifts entirely to Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, and Novak Djokovic, who returns with strong motivation. Jannik Sinner, winner of the 2025 Australian Open and French Open, arrives as a major favorite despite not yet proving dominant on grass.

In the women’s draw, Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka remain the top seeds. But without Raducanu, the Centre Court cheers are certain to sound different. British fans will still turn up — but without one name they can truly get behind together.

Cameron Norrie, who entered via wild card, is now the only British player with a realistic chance of making a deep run in the tournament. But expectations on him are far lower than they were on Draper.

What Comes Next for Draper and Raducanu?

Withdrawing from Wimbledon is not the end, but it still hurts. Draper is reportedly set to undergo a full medical evaluation before deciding whether to play the next grass-court event or shift straight to recovery for the hard-court season. Raducanu, with a stress fracture diagnosis, will likely need at least six to eight weeks of rest — meaning the US Open at the end of August is still very much in doubt.

One thing is certain: both are still young. Draper has plenty of potential left. Raducanu has already proven she can win a Grand Slam from qualifying — that was not just luck. Wimbledon 2025 may have to pass them by, but their story is far from over.

The question now is whether the support systems around them — coaching teams, medical programs, schedule management — are smart enough to make sure these two gifted players are not once again sacrificed to a calendar that never truly stops turning.
