MILAN — Franco Baresi, one of AC Milan and Italy’s most celebrated defenders, has died at the age of 66. The former captain spent his entire club career in red and black, and Milan said the news left “the entire history of AC Milan” in tears.
The loss matters well beyond Milan. Baresi was a World Cup winner with Italy, a one-club man who captained the Rossoneri for 15 seasons, and a figure whose number 6 shirt was retired when he stepped away from the game.

ESPN reported that no cause of death was given. According to the report, Baresi had undergone surgery in August 2025 to remove a pulmonary nodule and later began a course of immunotherapy.
AS said he died at the Humanitas di Rozzano clinic on the outskirts of Milan after an illness that lasted roughly a year. The same report said his health had steadily deteriorated over several days before the announcement.

AC Milan said Baresi’s “example and integrity will remain forever embedded in the club’s DNA, just like his iconic number 6 shirt.” The club added that the condolences extended to his family were shared by “every Rossonero, who feels this loss as their own.”
That language reflects more than grief. Milan is losing a reference point, a player whose name sat beside the club’s most successful era. ESPN noted that Baresi won three European Cups and six Serie A titles with Milan, and made more than 700 appearances for the Rossoneri across 20 years, from 1977 to 1997.
He made his first-team debut at 17, in April 1978. In 1982, he stayed with Milan even after the club was relegated to Serie B for the second time in three seasons, then helped Italy win the World Cup that summer. He was handed the captaincy at 22.
With Italy, Baresi earned 81 caps and won the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He also finished third at the 1990 World Cup and runner-up at the 1994 tournament in the United States. AS said he remains the only footballer in history to have finished first, second and third at the World Cup.
For Milan, the practical impact is immediate. A club built on memory has lost one of its clearest symbols, and the reaction showed it. “Everyone at the club and all the Milanisti must live up to Franco Baresi's memory,” Milan said. “We must be strong and gather every bit of energy, even at this saddest of times.”
Baresi’s influence also stretched into the club’s identity after retirement. When he ended his playing career in 1997, Milan retired the number 6 shirt in his honor. That number now carries the weight of a career that helped shape both club and country, and the figure attached to it is gone at 66.
