The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to bring back DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts, a move that adds a productive interior defender as the team adjusts its roster. The 49ers agree acquire DeForest Buckner in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick, according to multiple reports.
Buckner is in his 11th season and has recorded 4.0 sacks, four tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits so far in 2026. He has also logged three passes defensed and a fumble recovery for the Colts.
A return to San Francisco. Buckner spent his first four NFL seasons with the 49ers before the team traded him to Indianapolis in 2020.
Buckner returns with production
The 49ers selected Buckner seventh overall in the 2016 draft out of Oregon. He played a key role on San Francisco’s defense during his first stint, which ended with the club advancing to Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season.
Buckner recorded 12.0 sacks for San Francisco in 2018 and 7.5 sacks in 2019. After his fourth season, the 49ers traded him to the Colts, who signed him to a long-term second contract.
Across 158 career games, Buckner has recorded 75.5 sacks, 101 tackles for loss and 196 quarterback hits. His return gives San Francisco a veteran defender with substantial experience playing for the organization, while Indianapolis receives a future draft pick.
The deal also follows a difficult stretch for Buckner and the Colts. NBC Sports reported that Buckner had been frustrated by Indianapolis’ losses in recent weeks and had an expiring contract.
San Francisco adjusts its roster
The Buckner trade was the second high-profile move by Indianapolis on the day of the deal. The Colts had earlier traded guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks.
San Francisco made further roster changes after reacquiring Buckner. The 49ers signed defensive lineman Kevin Givens to the practice squad and released wide receiver Malik Turner from the practice squad, according to a report published by Yahoo Sports. The team confirmed the transactions on X.
The trade gives the 49ers an additional experienced option along the defensive line. For Indianapolis, the agreement brings a 2027 fourth-round selection as Buckner leaves after recording 4.0 sacks in 2026.
