Big Sur wildfire swells past 3,700 acres, Highway 1 stays shut as evacuations continue

The Timber Fire had burned 3,774 acres in Monterey County by late Wednesday morning and remained just 7% contained, keeping Highway 1 closed and evacuations in place across parts of Big Sur. The blaze grew quickly through the day, adding 624 acres from an earlier Wednesday estimate and 785 acres since Tuesday evening.
Fire crews were forced to pull back Wednesday afternoon when cloud-to-ground lightning struck near the fire area, according to the U.S. Forest Service’s Los Padres National Forest. Teams moved to safe locations and were expected to stay there until the storm system passed. Once weather improves, firefighters will reassess the perimeter and return to the lines.
Fire pushes along the ridge
Officials said activity picked up early Wednesday around Partington Ridge and Coast Ridge Road on the southern edge of the fire. Flames kept backing toward Highway 1 as crews worked to shield nearby homes and reinforce containment lines. On the west side near Partington Ridge, dozer operators and ground crews were building containment lines, while other teams focused on holding the fire’s advance.
The situation remains fluid. Highway 1, a critical coastal route for residents, visitors and emergency access, is still closed in the area. Evacuation orders also remain in effect as the fire burns through steep, hard-to-reach terrain that has long challenged suppression efforts in Big Sur.
Storm adds another obstacle
The lightning delay underscores how fast conditions can turn in wildfire country. Crews were already fighting to keep the fire from spreading farther toward homes and the highway. The storm system introduced another layer of risk, briefly pushing firefighters away from the front lines at a time when they were trying to gain ground.
CAL FIRE’s 11:44 a.m. update marked the latest official size estimate Wednesday. Fire managers will now wait for safer conditions before sending crews back to assess what the fire did during the weather disruption and whether containment lines held through the afternoon.
For Big Sur, the next shift in weather may matter as much as the flames. Until the storm clears, the fire will keep burning under close watch, and the road closure along Highway 1 is expected to remain in place.
