Penélope Cruz has debuted a bright bleached blonde bob and bangs in a new Vogue Spain photoshoot, showing what the outlet described as her lightest, shortest look ever. The actress paired the cropped style with a sculptural white strapless dress, while other images from the shoot showed her in long dark hair.

The look is likely a wig, according to the source material, but it still marks a sharp change from the brunette styles Cruz has worn in recent appearances. The timing matters because hair changes like this often drive the conversation around image, identity, and the way stars use styling to shape a public moment.

Hair as a public statement

Cruz also recently went bleached blonde for her role in The Invite, and the photoshoot comes after a string of lighter looks. In May, she debuted fresh, bright highlights. In June, celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos shared photos of a blunt bob and bangs in a honey-colored shade, which he called the “boyfriend bob.”

Then, in July, she showed off another hair transformation, debuting what the source called a “weekend bob.” This month, she added another subtle French girl-coded update. The pace is striking. Short. Blonde. Dark. Then back again.

Cruz has said she often handles her hair herself. In comments quoted by Hello! from an Elle Canada interview in 2021, she said, “I do it almost all by myself! I grew up in my mother's hair salon, so I know a few tricks for keeping it healthy,” and added, “I know how to cut, colour and blow-dry people's hair.”

Hair loss, identity and confidence

A separate BBC report put hair in a very different frame. Russ Nicholson, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, said he began losing his hair in his 20s and that it “slowly chipped away” at his confidence. He has launched Hats Off, Gloucestershire, a campaign encouraging men and women to share their experiences of hair loss.

Nicholson said he was about 24 when his hair began to thin and decided to shave it aged 27 after receiving some “banter at work”. “I hated it,” he said. “It [my hair] was a real part of my identity and it slowly chipped away at my confidence.”

He now works as a scalp micropigmentation specialist. BBC said scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses tiny micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp, mimicking natural hair follicles to create an illusion of a fuller head of hair.

Nicholson said losing hair does not automatically mean people “become sad and depressed”, but that a loss of confidence can still affect job promotions, relationships and even whether someone goes to the swimming pool. He also said early signs of hair loss can appear before 21, and that stress and the cortisol release that follows can accelerate it.

He is calling for workplaces and community groups to support Hats Off Gloucestershire and check in on people living with hair loss. “Whoever you are, this conversation is for you; everyone’s welcome, and no one has to figure it,” Nicholson said.
