One person was killed and two teenagers were seriously wounded on Friday after an attacker armed with a sword entered a high school in central Sweden. Police detained the suspect at Brinell School in Fagersta, and officers later fired shots during the arrest, according to local reports.

The attack sent emergency crews racing to the school in the town northwest of Stockholm, where classes were underway and hundreds of students were on site. Police Chief Tommy Alriksson said the 18-year-old suspect had been arrested and that investigators had found the dead person as officers moved in to secure the building.

Police seal off school

Fagersta municipality said the assailant entered Brinellskolan and wounded several people before being detained. The local government urged the public to stay away from roadblocks and follow police instructions as officers continued work at the scene with multiple resources.

Police searched inside the school while nearby schools were locked down, officials said. The municipality also set up a crisis center in a sports hall near the school to help those affected.

Shots fired during arrest

Local media, including Aftonbladet, reported that the attacker was shot in the leg by police. Police confirmed shots were fired during the arrest, according to the TT news agency. The suspect is now in custody.

Authorities have not said what drove the attack. Alriksson said there was no reason at this stage to believe more than one person was involved. Police planned to review any available camera footage as part of the investigation.

A school hit hard

The attack took place as the school year was getting underway after the summer break, adding another jolt to a country that has faced other high-profile attacks at educational institutions in recent years. Sweden saw a deadly stabbing at a secondary school in Malmö in 2022, and an adult education centre shooting in Örebro in February 2025 killed 10 people.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it a serious incident in Fagersta and said police were working intensively. For now, the focus stays on the school grounds, the injured teenagers, and what investigators find next inside Brinell School.
