RENNES — Rennes vs PSG opened Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 title defense in Brittany after heatwave damage left the Parc des Princes pitch “severely damaged.” The fixture was reversed, and PSG had to fight back from 2-0 down to salvage a draw in their league opener.
The move changed the setting, the pressure and the mood. Instead of starting at home in the capital, PSG found themselves chasing the game at Roazhon Park, where Rennes took control early and briefly looked set for a statement win.
Heat damage forced the reversal
The French champions had originally been scheduled to host Rennes in Paris, but heatwaves made the Parc des Princes surface unplayable. That forced the league fixture to be switched to Brittany at the last minute.
It was not a small inconvenience. PSG’s first match of the season became an away test, and the venue change left Luis Enrique’s side without the home advantage they had expected for the start of their title defense.
Rennes, who finished sixth last season, handled the opening stages better. Sebastian Szymanski put the hosts ahead in the ninth minute, and Esteban Lepaul doubled the lead before the break.
PSG looked off pace. For a long stretch, the French champions were on course for defeat.
Torres changed the game at half-time
Luis Enrique responded at the interval by sending on debutant Ferran Torres, replacing Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele. The change worked fast.
Torres scored in the 71st minute and again in the 82nd, turning a poor opening display into a result PSG could live with. The former Manchester City forward, who completed a reported £42.7m move from Barcelona on 15 August, became the key figure in the comeback.
He arrived with a big reputation. He left with an immediate impact.
Rennes could not hold on, even after taking a two-goal lead. PSG’s bench, packed with quality, finally tilted the contest back toward the champions as Rennes ran out of answers in the closing stages.
What the result means for PSG
For PSG, the draw is a mixed start, not the one they wanted for a title defense built around domestic dominance and another Champions League push. The club are aiming to win their sixth consecutive Ligue 1 title this season, as well as a third straight Champions League trophy.
The point also gives an early look at PSG’s depth. They were forced into a difficult away opener, then relied on a substitute to rescue them. That matters in a long season, especially when the schedule and conditions already pushed the team out of its comfort zone.
Rennes will take encouragement from the way they controlled the first half and made PSG chase the match. But the late turnaround will sting. A 2-0 lead at home against the champions had been there to protect.
PSG will now move on from a strange opening night that started with a damaged pitch and ended with Torres’ brace. The question is how quickly Luis Enrique’s side can turn that recovery into momentum, with the title race only just beginning.
