A father was hijacked outside SRS Primary School in Durban on Wednesday while dropping off his children, and CCTV footage shows schoolchildren watching as armed men forced him out of his Audi. The stolen vehicle was later tracked to KwaMashu, north of the city, where security teams found it stripped and damaged.
How the hijacking unfolded
According to information received, the suspects arrived in a silver Renault Triber. They pulled up beside the Audi, threatened the driver with a firearm and ordered him out. One of the men then moved toward the driver’s window while another opened the back door and removed two children from the rear seat.
The camera outside the school captured the scene in full view of bystanders. A group of schoolchildren watched the hijacking unfold outside the Durban school, turning a routine morning drop-off into a fast-moving armed robbery.
Vehicle later found stripped
Zain Soosiwala of Secure SA private security company said the hijacked Audi was later traced to KwaMashu, north of Durban. By the time it was recovered, the vehicle’s interior had been stripped and it had suffered damage.
No further details were immediately available on the suspects. The CCTV footage, however, has already circulated widely and drawn attention to how quickly armed criminals can strike in public places, even at school gates where parents often assume there is some level of safety in numbers.
School gates remain a vulnerable target
The incident lands in a country that continues to wrestle with violent vehicle crime. South Africa’s acting police minister, Firoz Cachalia, said this week that murder had declined, while carjacking, business robberies and cash-in-transit heists also showed significant reductions in the April-to-June 2026 crime statistics.
Even so, the Durban hijacking underlines how carjacking remains a live threat on ordinary streets. School drop-off points, estate gates and shopping routes have all featured in recent camera-caught incidents, and security firms regularly urge motorists to stay alert when stopping in predictable places.
For the family outside SRS Primary School, the morning was over in seconds. For everyone else who saw the footage, the warning was plain. The next delivery, the next school run, the next stop at a gate can still become the target.
