A routine call about a possible dumped body in KwaZulu-Natal turned into a surprise rescue on Monday. A 26-year-old woman, found wrapped in a white cloth on an embankment in Mount Vernon, woke up and told emergency responders she had simply been sleeping.
Reaction Unit South Africa, or RUSA, said two separate callers had alerted the organisation after they believed a human body had been left in the area. Officers and paramedics were sent to the scene on an unpaved road, where they found the figure lying tightly wrapped beside the embankment. For a moment, the scene pointed to something far more serious. Then the woman stirred.
False alarm on a roadside embankment
RUSA said first responders moved in to check the person when the 26-year-old became responsive. She then explained that she had been asleep. That answer quickly eased fears that she had died or been the victim of a crime. It also ended a brief but tense response in an area where the sight of a motionless person drew immediate concern.
The organisation said the calls had come from two different people, both convinced a body had been dumped there. That kind of report can trigger a fast emergency response, especially when a person is found alone on the side of a road and wrapped in cloth. In this case, the initial fear turned out to be false.
Woman gives no details, goes back to sleep
According to RUSA, the woman refused to give further details after waking. She then returned to sleep. No information was immediately provided about why she had been on the embankment, or how long she had been there.
The incident underlines how quickly an apparently grim discovery can turn on its head. It also mirrors other recent calls to RUSA in KwaZulu-Natal that ended in unexpected explanations. In June, the organisation said a missing Durban woman was later found asleep in her own bed after her family launched a search. In that case, the alarm spread after relatives could not reach her and feared something had happened.
Monday’s call in Mount Vernon ended with no crime scene, no casualty and no body. Just a woman who woke up, spoke briefly, and went back to sleep as responders stood down.
