The shooting happened in Punchbowl about 5:50 p.m. and ended with Meehan dying at the scene after paramedics tried to save him. Police believe the gunman acted alone. They are also examining whether outlaw motorcycle gang links played a role.
Shot in a busy community setting
The killing unfolded outside a community centre, a place usually tied to local sport, meetings and family activity. Instead, it became a crime scene. Meehan was struck multiple times in the car park and could not be revived.
Police later said a stolen silver Lexus sedan was seen fleeing the area before being found in Bass Hill. That vehicle is part of the investigation as detectives piece together how the attack was carried out and who may have helped, if anyone.
Detectives examine possible gang links
On Thursday, State Crime Commander and Acting Assistant Commissioner Grant Taylor told 702 ABC Sydney that police at this stage believed a single gunman was responsible. Investigators are still working through the motive, but one line of inquiry is whether the shooting was connected to outlaw motorcycle gangs.
Meehan’s background is also drawing scrutiny. The ABC reported that he had recently been charged by Queensland Police Service with a range of serious offences, including deprivation of liberty, extortion, armed robbery and possessing dangerous drugs. He was due back in Brisbane Magistrates Court next month.

The shooting adds to a string of high-risk gang-related cases that police agencies across Australia continue to confront. Outlaw motorcycle gang investigations have long stretched beyond state borders, and this case now links Sydney’s south-west with court proceedings in Queensland.
