For the Edmonton Oilers, the search for a steadier start in goal will not include Connor Hellebuyck, according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. Hellebuyck will not waive his no-move clause for a trade to a Canadian team, leaving Winnipeg Jets negotiations and interest from other clubs in focus.

LeBrun made the comment on OverDrive on TSN 1050 on Monday. Hellebuyck remains suspended without pay after failing to report to Winnipeg’s training camp following his trade request.

“People have wondered about Edmonton for Connor Hellebuyck, he’s not gonna play in Canada. So, please let’s stop with that. That’s not happening,” LeBrun said.

Pierre LeBrun says Carolina remains interested

The Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres are the best-known suitors for the goaltender, according to TSN. LeBrun said Carolina remains interested, but the Hurricanes do not believe Winnipeg has enough leverage to make them improve their current offer.

That narrows the field for a high-profile trade while leaving the Jets with a standoff. Hellebuyck made his request public last month and hoped a deal would come before the season. No trade has materialized.

Winnipeg has stood by its asking price. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has not set a timeline for a deal, saying the process could take an undefined amount of time.

“You don’t have a crystal ball,” Cheveldayoff told TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger last week. He said early conversations with Hellebuyck’s representatives made clear that negotiations might take a while, though what that meant remained undefined.

Cheveldayoff said the return would shape the team’s outlook and that the decision would come when an offer was presented. Until then, Winnipeg has not indicated it will lower its demands.

Both teams have started 2-0-1

The Jets have opened the season 2-0-1 without Hellebuyck. Stuart Skinner earned two stars, and Clay Stevenson picked up a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday.

Edmonton also has a 2-0-1 record, but has allowed 14 goals through three games. The Oilers have relied on Devon Levi and Tristan Jarry while Frederik Andersen remains sidelined with an offseason knee injury.

The contrasting starts add urgency to the goaltending question in Edmonton, but do not change Hellebuyck’s reported position: he will not consider a move to a Canadian club. For Winnipeg, the early record also means the team has continued without its suspended starter as trade talks remain unresolved.

Hellebuyck is coming off a difficult season. In 2025-26, he posted a .895 save percentage, the lowest of his career and the first time he had fallen below .900. He also recorded a 2.86 goals-against average and a 23-23-11 record.

The 33-year-old appeared in 57 games last season, his lowest total since 2020-21, and started five games for Team USA at the Olympics, where the team won gold. In 2025, he received the Hart, Vezina and William M. Jennings trophies.

Hellebuyck signed his contract extension in October 2023. It carries an annual cap hit of $8.5 million through the 2030-31 season.

For now, he remains suspended without pay, while Winnipeg waits for an offer that meets its asking price.
