Xbox has secured streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, giving the service a way to offer the game at launch — but not necessarily to PC players. Microsoft’s deal appears narrower than an initial report suggested: a company executive said Xbox will not stream the game exclusively or to PCs.

The rights are expected to take effect in November, when Microsoft plans to open access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The length of the agreement has not been disclosed.

A deal with narrower reach

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma previewed a move involving GTA VI during an employee all-hands meeting, telling staff Microsoft was preparing something no other platform holder was doing. People familiar with the company’s plans said the announcement referred to the streaming-rights deal.

The Verge initially reported that the arrangement was exclusive. But Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball later said on X that Microsoft would not stream the game exclusively and would not offer it to PC users. His comments point to a deal covering console streaming, though the precise limits remain unclear.

Xbox Cloud Gaming can typically be accessed through apps and web browsers. The available details do not establish whether those routes will carry GTA VI, leaving open how broadly players will be able to use the streaming offer.

Why PC access matters

Rockstar Games has not announced a PC version of GTA VI. A streaming option could therefore give PC players a way to play without owning an Xbox Series X or Series S, or a PlayStation 5. Ball’s comments, however, suggest that this deal will not provide that route for PC users.

Microsoft’s planned expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming in November could bring the game to Xbox players who stream rather than install it locally. The company has not said how long the rights will last or clarified which devices and access methods will be supported. Those details will determine how much the deal changes players’ options when GTA VI launches.
