Google’s new laptops launched without the phone-integration features that were meant to set them apart for Samsung users, including owners of the latest Galaxy models running Android 17. Google says support is coming “over the coming weeks,” leaving early buyers unable to use the advertised link between phone and laptop.

The laptops reached retail on October 4. Google’s Better Together suite is designed to connect a compatible Android phone with a Googlebook, enabling phone apps to appear in laptop windows and bringing notifications, files and hotspot access across devices. But Samsung phones currently fail to complete the connection, even when the devices can detect one another.

A software gap, not a setup mistake

Google has confirmed the features do not yet support Samsung devices, according to reports from early users and testing. The problem is not described as a hardware defect or user error; Samsung phone owners will need a software update before the integration works.

The restriction matters because Samsung’s newest phones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, ship with Android 17—the version Google requires for Better Together. Android 17 alone, however, is not enough. Google’s cross-device tools also depend on support for Samsung devices that has yet to arrive.

Without that support, users cannot stream phone apps to the laptop or sync notifications and Do Not Disturb settings. They also lose access to files stored on the phone and the one-click Instant Hotspot feature. Those are central parts of the continuity pitch, not minor extras.

Android 17 compatibility has limits

Googlebook OS is the successor to Chrome OS, with a desktop-style experience and a full desktop version of Chrome. Better Together is meant to make that laptop environment feel more connected to Android phones, turning routine tasks such as checking alerts or moving files into a shared workflow.

For now, the launch gap makes that promise conditional. Google has not provided a specific date for Samsung support, only saying it should arrive in the coming weeks. Buyers pairing a new Googlebook with a Samsung phone will have to wait for that software change before the headline features work.
