The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte rode the Elizabeth line into central London on Saturday, sharing the carriage with other passengers. The trip offered a rare public glimpse of the mother and daughter travelling by train with their security detail rather than in a chauffeur-driven motorcade.
A fellow commuter spotted them aboard the train. A source told HELLO! that Charlotte looked almost “amazed” as she took in the carriage. The pair got off at Tottenham Court Road, though their destination was not known.
They kept a low profile. Their security detail was present but, according to the source, did not make its presence obvious. Catherine held Charlotte’s hand as they left the train.
“They spoke to members of the public sitting across from them,” the source told HELLO!. The pair appeared relaxed, chatted and smiled, the source said. Catherine was also seen looking at her phone for a couple of minutes.
The outing stood out because Princess Charlotte’s appearances on public transport are rare. HELLO! reported that the family usually travels in motorcades or uses private helicopters. The report described Saturday’s ride as a girls’ day out, but did not say where they were headed.
For other passengers, the scene was a brief encounter on an ordinary train journey, with the royal pair seated among members of the public. The source said the security team tried to make the trip feel as normal as possible.
Catherine wore a burgundy outfit and matching heels, according to HELLO!. She and Charlotte travelled on the Elizabeth line, which the publication described as TfL’s newest tube line. The report said it opened during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee year.
The Princess of Wales has used the Underground before. HELLO! reported that she attended the London Underground’s 150th anniversary at Baker Street station with the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2013. Catherine, who was pregnant with Prince George at the time, said during that engagement that she “missed” travelling on public transport.
The couple also rode the Elizabeth line in 2023. The Prince and Princess of Wales travelled to a pub in Soho to hear how London workers were preparing for King Charles’s coronation, and surprised fellow commuters on the way.
Charlotte has previously joined her mother for cultural outings, including a performance by The Royal Ballet School at Opera Holland Park in July, HELLO! reported. The magazine said Charlotte is in Year 8 at Lambrook Preparatory School in Berkshire.
On Saturday, the pair’s journey ended at Tottenham Court Road, where Catherine held her daughter’s hand as they stepped off the train.
