Gemini Adds Scheduled Calendar Checks, but Traffic Estimates May Lag

Gemini can check calendars, search for news on a schedule and suggest weekend plans, turning Google’s AI assistant into a tool for recurring tasks. Some automation needs connected apps, and Gemini Spark offers more extensive email and calendar functions to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Small setup details matter. Gemini’s estimates may not include real-time traffic, and scheduled plans use the location available when the action was first created—even if the user later travels.

AI Gemini can run scheduled checks

Users can ask Gemini to review their calendar each morning and estimate travel time between events. Engadget gives an example prompt: “Check my events for the day and estimate total travel and driving time using Maps every morning at 7:30AM.” The feature works only when relevant apps, such as calendar and email, are connected.

Gemini uses the information it has when it generates an answer, Engadget reports. That means its travel estimate may not reflect live traffic. The publication advises checking the route in Maps before leaving.

That caveat has a practical consequence: an automated estimate can help with planning, but it should not replace a fresh route check when traffic could affect a trip.

Users can also set Gemini to search for updates on a topic at a chosen time and send a summary. One example prompt asks it to search every morning for the latest news about Apple. Engadget says users can run up to 10 scheduled actions at once, and Gemini sends a notification when results are ready.

Location and saved instructions shape results

For weekend suggestions, users can ask Gemini to propose cafes or restaurants on a recurring schedule. Giving the assistant access to location data lets it look for nearby options without the user naming a place. But scheduled actions do not switch to a new location during travel; they use the location accessed when the action was first set up.

Gemini also supports saved instruction sets called skills, which are replacing Gems, according to Engadget. A user preparing a newsletter could create a skill containing brand guidelines, then invoke those instructions in a chat with a command such as “/skillname.” Google says users will soon be able to invoke a skill with the @ symbol instead.

The feature can spare users from re-entering the same requirements in each conversation. Its usefulness depends on setting up the instructions first and invoking the skill when needed.

Gemini Spark connects to Google apps

Gemini Spark is an always-on agent for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Engadget says it can keep working when a phone and laptop are off. It can scan a week’s emails, summarize important messages, create a to-do list and add appointments to a calendar.

Those actions require connecting Gmail, Calendar and Drive. Engadget says the apps are turned off by default, so users need to enable access in settings before Spark can use them.

That default setting puts control in the user’s hands, while the permissions determine how much personal information the assistant can process. Email and calendar access are central to the more hands-off features, not a requirement for every scheduled search or prompt.

Gemini’s recurring actions can reduce repetitive checks, but they have clear limits: no more than 10 scheduled actions at a time, location tied to initial setup, and travel estimates that may not use live traffic data.
