Atlético vs Man Utd carried pressure for a Manchester United side seeking a response, but the visitors left Madrid beaten 2-0 in their Champions League match on October 13. Barrios scored early for Atlético Madrid and Lookman added a second in the 79th minute, giving United little room to recover.

The defeat was compounded by a late red card for Leny Yoro, while Lisandro Martinez criticized United’s summer transfer business after the match. A difficult result on the pitch quickly became a public challenge to the club’s squad-building decisions.

United’s night began badly. Barrios put Atlético ahead in the first minute, according to The Guardian’s live report. Cardoso appeared to make it 2-0 before halftime, but VAR ruled out the goal, leaving Atlético with a one-goal advantage at the break.

Lookman eventually doubled the lead in the 79th minute. United had chances late on, but The Guardian reported that Joshua Zirkzee hesitated after an error and Matheus Cunha then had a shot saved by goalkeeper Oblak. The final score remained 2-0.

The match was played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. CNET’s preview said the fixture was a gameweek 2 clash in the UEFA Champions League, with kickoff scheduled for 9 p.m. local time.

Martinez calls for a stronger squad

Martinez’s comments after the loss put attention on United’s transfer business as well as the performance. Speaking to Amazon, he said: “Really poor. Really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.”

He said he expected the club to bring in more players to compete and pointed to Atlético’s squad as an example. “I expect more. 100%. I expect more from our technical director,” Martinez said. He also acknowledged the players had responsibility, adding that the club needed a strong squad prepared for difficult matches.

Martinez said United had built a foundation the previous season but was disappointed by the team’s display in Madrid. He argued that opponents had studied United’s style and that the club needed to examine areas beyond the coach and players.

Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s manager, said he had not seen Martinez’s comments when asked about the outburst. He said the immediate response after a defeat should be to stay together and work through it.

“We all care and show that in different ways but now is the time to be together and work through,” Carrick said, according to The Guardian.

A setback with consequences

The loss leaves United under pressure to respond on the pitch. The Guardian reported the club had won twice all season, and described the poor start as becoming a poor season. The match also offered little relief for Carrick: United fell behind almost immediately, failed to convert late opportunities and finished with 10 men after Yoro’s red card.

For supporters, Martinez’s remarks sharpen the question of whether United’s squad can compete against teams that have strengthened. His criticism was direct, but he did not absolve the players. “As players we have to do more,” he said, while also calling for more from the club’s technical director.

Atlético, by contrast, held its lead and closed out the match. The Guardian reported the final score: Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United.
