Apple’s “Pro and tell” event could bring its first touchscreen laptop, giving MacBook Pro buyers a new display option when the company holds a product briefing in Los Angeles on October 28. The company has not confirmed which products it will announce.
The most anticipated possibility is a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen. Reports also point to updates for other Macs and the iPad mini, but details remain unconfirmed ahead of the event.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro is the main possibility
The Verge reported that Apple’s long-rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro may finally appear at the event. If released, it would be Apple’s first touchscreen laptop and its first OLED laptop. The report said the device could include an iPhone-style Dynamic Island, though it is not expected to turn macOS into an iPad-like interface.
Possible touch features include gesture controls in native apps and a magnification effect when a user touches the display. The Verge said the laptop is expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than new M6 Pro or M6 Max processors. Apple may wait to update its higher-end chips until it introduces the M7 next year, according to the report.
That would make the expected redesign more about the screen and interaction than a chip upgrade. For buyers, the distinction matters: the rumored touchscreen model may not be the faster option, and The Verge reported it could carry a higher price as component shortages affect Apple’s product lineup.
The event format and product list are not settled publicly. Engadget reported that Apple’s invitation described a press-and-creator briefing rather than a traditional event. It also said rumored MacBook Pro sizes include 14-inch and 16-inch models, citing Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman for claims that the laptop could be thinner and lighter.
Other Macs and an OLED iPad mini may follow
Apple could also update the base MacBook Pro with an M6 chip, while keeping its display and design largely unchanged, The Verge reported. The iMac is another candidate for an M6 update, with possible new color options. Engadget likewise reported that the iMac may receive the M6, though it said the design is expected to remain the same.
The iPad mini may be the other major product in the briefing. The Verge reported that it could move from LCD to OLED and receive a processor upgrade from the A17 to the A20. An OLED screen could add $100 to the tablet’s cost, according to the report. Engadget also cited rumors of an OLED display, but reported a possible A20 Pro chip instead; Apple has confirmed none of these details.
Those potential changes would affect more than the flagship laptop. An OLED iPad mini would bring a different display technology to a smaller tablet, while an updated base MacBook Pro could offer a newer chip without the rumored touchscreen premium. The precise models, prices and specifications remain unknown.
Apple scheduled the “Pro and tell” event for October 28 at 1PM ET in Los Angeles, according to The Verge.
